For Breea, the call to foster care began during her everyday life. As a Special Education teacher, she watched students in foster care move from school to school, as many as four times in a single year. She saw the gaps that existed between children's needs and the support they received firsthand. That weighed on her heart, and eventually, it moved her to act.
Her husband Kyle had a different starting point. He'd always dreamed of being a dad. A new job, a move to Texas, and a more stable season of life shifted his goal from “someday” to "now I’m ready."
Together, Breea and Kyle became foster parents with PCHAS, and their journey started with a surprise. They knew there was a great need for families to foster school-age children, so they prepared to parent older kids. Yet, after completing all the necessary steps for verification, their first placement call was about a newborn. They almost said no because they were worried about finding daycare, but another PCHAS family offered to babysit during the workday until the child was old enough to attend daycare. Kyle and Breea knew this was God telling them to say yes.
"It has been God's plan," Breea reflected. The early days were a whirlwind, scrambling for baby items, navigating sleepless nights, and adjusting to life with an infant they hadn't planned for. But Kyle says he knew immediately this was what he was called to do. Asked if he'd fallen in love with children in foster care, his answer was simple: "Yes. The first night."
For this family, fostering is inseparable from their faith. As Christians, they wanted to live out their beliefs in a tangible way. That value-alignment is part of what drew them to PCHAS. "We liked the initial conversation with Travis," Kyle noted. "He was realistic, told us it was going to be hard, and promised that PCHAS would be with us every step of the way."
The most challenging parts? The uncertainty. The waiting. Living moment by moment. But when asked what they'd say to someone considering foster care, Breea didn't hesitate: "It is the most amazing blessing. It is going to be hard. It's special."
One of Breea's friends heard her story and started the process of becoming a foster parent right away. That's the ripple effect of one family saying yes.
If Kyle and Breea's story stirred something in you, that feeling is worth following. PCHAS would love to talk with you about what fostering could look like for your family. Connect with a Foster Care & Adoption Guide at fosteradopt@pchas.org or Join an Online Info Session to take the first step.
