With school no longer in session, activities fill the days for many children. Swimming with friends, exploring a museum, going to Six Flags and participating in church activities make summer a special time for kids and families.

Parents can get in on the fun, too, especially since they are the ones who make it happen. Holly, an adoptive mom, just spent the week at camp with her daughter. Even though she’ll need some time for her body to recover, she loved every minute. “My head is pounding, and I’ve officially lost my mind. But this girl is worth it. ALL of it.”

At camp, children experience many “firsts” as they try new things. When a child jumps off the high dive, goes down the zipline, or makes new friends, they aren’t just having fun; they are conquering fears and gaining courage to face the challenges of “real-life” back home.

After a year unlike any other, our team at PCHAS is relieved to see children experiencing many normal summer activities again. We recently shared about the importance of normalcy for children in foster care. Vacations and time with family nourish the soul, just like camp and other church activities where kids learn songs and Bible stories they can carry throughout their lifetime.

Kids in foster care deserve all of the typical experiences that form the best summer memories, but they can’t do it without a safe and loving family. Due to the shortage of Texas foster families, some kids are spending their summer sleeping in hotel rooms and churches. If you’ve ever thought about fostering or adopting, we’d like to share some basic information to help you understand the need.
