Beating the Odds

Research shows that 30-50% of kids in foster care won't graduate high school. Kerra and Amber are two examples of how PCHAS clients are beating the odds.

Kerra

When Kerra entered foster care as a young teen, she was depressed and adrift. But Kerra has come a long way. Her Foster Care Case Management case worker writes that, “She has proven again and again that she is doing well for herself, making wise decisions and is well on her way to a successful and independent adult life.” Kerra grew into a goal-oriented student who mentored her classmates and graduated early. Recently, she graduated from cosmetology school and is licensed with a full-time job at a salon. Kerra rents her own apartment and is saving for a car.

Amber

Amber is a special client of our Foster Care Case Management Program in Joplin, Missouri. She has always been drawn to work with children, and she uses her talent by volunteering at her church’s daycare and at Head Start. After graduating high school, she plans to get certified in child care and begin working with kids. Known for her positive attitude, Amber likes reading, painting and crafts in her free time.
