Small routines are simple habits we do every day, like brushing our teeth in the morning or reading before bed. Even though they may seem unimportant, these routines can help us feel calm, safe, and emotionally strong.

Routines help our brains know what to expect. When we know what comes next, we feel less worried or stressed. For example, having a set bedtime routine can help your body relax and prepare for sleep. This can help you feel more rested and happier the next day.

Small routines also give us a feeling of control. Life can sometimes feel confusing or overwhelming, especially when things change. Doing familiar tasks reminds us that some things stay the same, even when other things don’t.

Routines can also help us build confidence. Each time we complete a simple routine, like making our bed or finishing homework at the same time each day, we feel proud of ourselves. These small successes add up and help us feel more stable inside.

In short, small routines act like anchors. They keep us steady, calm, and ready to handle our feelings each day.

Struggling to build routines that stick? The counselors at The Counseling Centers at PCHAS can help. We work with children, adults, and families to build healthy habits and emotional stability — in person or virtually.
