What You Need to Know About Foster Care in Texas - 2026

Foster families provide a safe and nurturing family for kids when it’s not safe for them to remain at home. When kids are removed, workers contact PCHAS and other agencies to find a home. Today, most of the calls are about school-aged kids, sibling groups, and African American or Hispanic children.

In Texas, more than 9,000 kids are in foster care with a non-relative.

62% are older than 5.

74% are children of color.

46% of the sibling groups in foster care are separated from each other.

When families aren’t available, the risk of siblings being separated, kids sleeping in hotels, and young adults aging out without strong family connections increases significantly. Without enough committed, trained, well-supported foster families, the Texas foster care system will never be able to provide kids with the safe, nurturing childhood they deserve.
