A Path Built on Curiosity About People
Aaron's journey into counseling started with a simple fascination: people. After earning his bachelor's degree in Psychology from The University of Texas at Austin in 2002, he headed straight to graduate school at Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, where he earned his Master's degree in Counseling Psychology in 2004.
"I knew I wanted to be in some profession where I was helping people," Aaron says. "By the time I was in my 4th year in undergrad, I knew that I wanted to be a mental health counselor."
That calling has guided more than 20 years of work across a wide range of settings — pediatric clinics, drug and alcohol treatment with adult offenders in the correctional system, residential treatment centers, inpatient and outpatient care, and telehealth services for children and families. Aaron brings deep experience working with adults, children, teenagers, couples, and groups.
In-Person or Virtual — Finding the Right Fit
At The Counseling Center at PCHAS, Aaron offers both in-person and virtual counseling. He takes a thoughtful approach to helping clients figure out which format fits them best.
For virtual counseling, Aaron looks for clients who feel comfortable using technology — a smartphone, tablet, or computer — and who can engage naturally through a screen. He also considers practical factors like transportation and location that make telehealth a great option for many people.
When it comes to younger children, Aaron prefers meeting in person. "The interaction is better in person with that young age," he explains, especially when using play therapy techniques. For adults, he takes a closer look at their specific needs, presenting concerns, and treatment goals to help determine the best path forward.
Shaping the Next Generation
In July 2024, Aaron became a Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor — a role he takes seriously. For him, it's about more than checking a box. It's about investing in the future of mental health care.
"I care about the future of mental health therapy," Aaron says. "I want the next generation to gain the knowledge of how they can make themselves better as a therapist as the years go on."
He sees his role as consultant, mentor, and teacher — someone who helps younger counselors understand what it truly takes to build a lasting career in this field.
What San Antonio Families Are Dealing With
At the San Antonio Counseling Center, Aaron works with clients navigating ADHD, trauma, depression, anxiety, grief and bereavement, and those seeking couples or family counseling.
His message to anyone in the community who is struggling is simple and powerful: you don't have to stay stuck.
"You can get help to make a change in your life," Aaron says. "I would always want my clients to know how to take care of themselves physically and emotionally by having good mental health."
