Every journey in foster care and adoption begins with a calling to make a difference. For Tammie Durham, that calling has shaped a career dedicated to supporting families who choose to be family for children who need one. As a Home Developer with PCHAS, she has witnessed countless beautiful moments of families coming together, children finding permanency, and communities supporting each other. In this Q&A, Tammie shares her experiences, insights, and the profound joy she finds in her work, offering a glimpse into the transformative world of foster care and adoption.

What drew you to work with families interested in foster care & adoption?

My passion has always been working with families and supporting children. I started as a Case Manager in Graham and worked as an Adoption Specialist in Wichita Falls, but I discovered my true calling as a Home Developer. For the past seven years, I've been deeply invested in preparing and supporting families through the licensing process.

What makes your work as a home developer so rewarding?

It's all about relationships. I love getting to know families, walking alongside them throughout their journey, and being present for those moments of placement and connection. There's something special about seeing families come together and thrive.

Can you share a memorable experience from your work?

I remember three families who lived within a block of each other, who all adopted a large sibling group. Ideally, siblings are adopted to one family, but sometimes logistically that is hard to accomplish. These families worked together to keep the children connected and were split between 3 houses. They get to grow up together because of these families’ commitment to keeping brothers and sisters together. Now, I see these families at church, school events - they're integrated into our community, and they're successful. Watching these children grow and flourish is incredibly fulfilling.

What advice would you give to those considering foster parenting?

Get involved! Spend time around current foster families. Do respite care, help at church events, talk to experienced foster parents. Learn from those who are living this journey. Don't just dive in without knowledge - seek understanding and connection.

Why do you continue working for PCHAS?

Simply put, I love my job. The staff feels like family, and working at a Christian agency allows me to live out my faith daily. We pray for our families in staff meetings, support each other, and truly believe in the work we're doing.

One of your major roles is working with our respite families. What's the importance of respite care?

Respite is crucial. It gives foster parents a chance to recharge, preventing burnout. It's not just about handling difficult situations, but about maintaining the emotional and mental well-being of families so they can continue providing loving, stable homes for children.

All PCHAS families receive dedicated support from compassionate staff like Tammie. If you're considering fostering, adopting, or supporting families who do, we would love to connect with you.
