“It’s a normal neighborhood,” says Andrew Rogers, Home Development & Intake Coordinator, of the Itasca Foster Care Village.  “Our families are going about their daily lives, the kids get ready for school in the morning and some parents go to work.” The Village is home to six foster families who receive constant support from Presbyterian Children’s Home & Services staff on the campus. Support ranges from tutoring for children, counseling and optional activities such as group bible study.

Although things have changed slightly around the Village because of COVID-19, life continues to go on normally for the families. They enjoy many amenities, such as an activity center, gym and swimming pool. “It’s common to see the kids get off the school bus, grab a snack and go play basketball,” Rogers explains. The Village offers the opportunity to live in a private community filled with other unique families that share a common bond. It’s a neighborhood with strong connections.

Over the course of the summer, children were able to engage in a number of optional programs facilitated by Village staff, as well as participate with usual summer activities. “Some teens got a normal summer job,” says Rogers. With all the buzz and activity happening on campus some families opted for a getaway to Camp Gilmont. While there, children played football and learned archery. Others opted to participate in a virtual leadership convention facilitated by PCHAS staff. A number of children grew strawberries and watermelons in a community garden and crafted quilts with the guidance of Village staff.

“Our families are able to be around others who have similar goals and experiences as their own,” Rogers says. “Here at the Village we offer a sense of community.”

The Foster Care Village is a community that offers the space and support foster families need to thrive. Our families find connection at The Village and kids excel in a neighborhood where they are known and loved.
