Education

One of the ways we help children tap into their strengths and achieve their goals of healing is to focus on their education.

PCHAS is a member of the Coalition for Residential Education (CORE), the national group of nonprofit organizations that serve economically and socially disadvantaged children through residential education. Our learning programs serve all ages of children in a number of program settings.

Our team of dedicated staff members and tutors offer consistent and skilled support by mentoring, tutoring and advocating for the children in our care.

Education for Children at the Itasca Foster Care Village

  • We help children in the Foster Care Village to strengthen their academic skills set and to develop individual educational goals.
  • We offer on-campus tutoring and our education team also advocates on behalf of children who need extra help.
  • The staff work with teachers and others in the public school system to make sure our children get the academic attention they need and deserve.
  • Children living in the Foster Care Village set a personal goal to maintain a C-average or better in each of their school subjects.

Education for Foster Care Village Youth 16 and Older

As youth prepare to graduate from high school, the PCHAS education team helps them, define their career and educational objectives, choose the university, college or technical school that best fits their needs, and to obtain the skills needed for post-secondary transition. We even help them submit applications to educational institutions, apply for financial aid grants and secure housing. Many of the youth in our care qualify for grants and scholarships.

Education for Children in our Community-Based Foster Care Program

Families in our Child and Family and Foster Care programs have access to PCHAS education staff for consultation and educational advocacy. Our education team educates foster parents and staff about ways to emphasize academics with kids in our care and how to work with school staff to help students succeed.

Education Support Services for former Foster Care Village and Group Home residents

Presbyterian Children’s Homes and Services (PCHAS) provides two programs for former residents of its Foster Care Village and its former Group Home Program.

The Transitional Living Program serves former residents ages 18 to 25. It helps former residents make a successful transition to independent living, apply to college and adjust to college or the workforce.

The Advanced Education Program serves former residents 18 and older. They are welcome to come back and visit with our Director of Advanced Education to request assistance for school and career guidance. Former residents who are ready to set goals and take action can apply for this program and its related assistance funds. Please use our Contact page to ask for an application to the Advanced Education Program.
