Meet Larita Hess, a dedicated mentor at Presbyterian Children's Homes and Services (PCHAS), who has been making a difference in the lives of children for over 13 years. One of her most inspiring success stories is that of Janiyah, a young girl who faced significant behavioral challenges.
When Larita first met Janiyah, she was a disruptive student with a negative attitude and poor grades. Referred by a school counselor due to her behavioral issues, Janiyah seemed lost and unsure of her self-worth. Larita, affectionately known as "Tee Tee" by her mentees, saw potential in Janiyah that others had overlooked.
Larita’s approach was one of tough love mixed with unwavering support. She reminded Janiyah that she was valuable and capable of turning her life around. Larita's strategy involved role-playing exercises where she and Janiyah would switch roles, allowing Janiyah to see herself from a different perspective. This technique helped Janiyah understand the impact of her behavior on others.
Larita also emphasized the importance of self-respect and respect for others, instilling in Janiyah the principle of treating others as she would like to be treated. This fundamental lesson was reinforced through various activities, including outings where Janiyah practiced grace and manners.
The journey was not without its obstacles. Janiyah struggled with anger management and self-control. However, with Larita's guidance, she learned to channel her energy into positive outlets such as sports. Larita's consistent encouragement and the safe space she provided allowed Janiyah to gradually improve her behavior and attitude.
Over time, Janiyah's self-esteem blossomed. She began to think about her future and set goals for herself. Her academic performance improved significantly, and she made the honor roll—a milestone that filled both her and Larita with pride. Janiyah is now looking forward to graduating and has set her sights on a career in cosmetology.
For Larita, the experience of mentoring Janiyah has been profoundly rewarding. She cherishes the opportunity to witness and contribute to the positive transformation in her mentees’ lives. Larita believes in the goodness of God and sees her role as a mentor as part of her mission to spread kindness and support.
