From a young age, Destiny faced significant challenges. As the eldest among her siblings, she bore the responsibility of caring for them while her mother battled substance abuse. The weight of her family responsibilities began to take a toll on Destiny’s mental health during Junior High. When she bravely confided in her school counselor, Destiny and her siblings were placed in foster care, marking the start of a new chapter in their lives. They went through multiple placements before they found themselves at Presbyterian Children’s Homes and Services’ Itasca Foster Care Village.
At Itasca Foster Care Village, Destiny discovered more than just a safe haven-she found a family. Placed with Mr. and Mrs. Sweet, she received both love and support and guidance that ignited her passion for psychology. Under Mr. Sweet’s mentorship, Destiny flourished, gaining valuable insights and direction for her future.
Presbyterian Children’s Homes and Services didn’t just provide shelter; they equipped Destiny with the tools she needed to succeed. Through the guidance of Gayle, the advanced education director, Destiny accessed resources that empowered her educational journey. With Gayle’s assistance, Destiny decided to pursue a degree in psychology.
In December 2023, Destiny graduated with her associate’s degree. Now, with her sights set on obtaining her bachelor’s degree in Fall 2024, Destiny is fueled by her desire to make a difference in the lives of others. “I want to make a local impact on children and families in need,” said Destiny.
Through the care and guidance of Presbyterian Children’s Homes and Services, Destiny not only overcame adversity but also discovered her purpose.
