January is National Mentoring Month, a time to celebrate the profound impact mentoring can have on young lives. At Presbyterian Children’s Homes and Services (PCHAS), stories like Julie and Zachary’s remind us why mentoring matters.
Julie, a part-time mentor from Saint Louis, Missouri, felt called to make a difference in a child’s life. When she joined PCHAS, she was paired with Zachary, a second grader referred by his school counselor due to frequent absences and behavioral challenges. From their first meeting, Julie recognized Zach’s struggles. He was anxious and sarcastic, often using humor to mask his difficulties in school.
Drawing on her background in education and her own experiences with trauma, Julie committed to helping Zachary thrive. She worked closely with his school counselor, connected with his family, and set clear expectations. While the journey was far from easy, Julie’s dedication helped Zachary grow.
Over time, Zachary’s attendance improved, his behavior in school stabilized, and he began to form friendships. These milestones reflected the collaborative efforts of his school, family, and Julie’s steadfast support. For Julie, the experience was deeply rewarding: “It felt like I was where I was supposed to be.”
Julie and Zachary’s story illustrates how one caring mentor can transform a child’s life. Through persistence and compassion, Julie helped Zachary overcome obstacles and discover a brighter future.
