There are many different types of counseling and ways to participate, but the time is always yours, and it's a safe place to figure out how to move forward, no matter what you need to talk about.

Let’s explore the most common ways PCHAS Counselors help you work through whatever you want to discuss.

Counseling for Adults

Most therapy for adults is what you would likely call talk therapy. At PCHAS, our counselors often use Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy techniques. These are not the only approaches we use, but typically focus on exploring how our thoughts and feelings influence our emotional responses and behaviors and help you set goals and find solutions.

Adults can participate in counseling individually but may also arrange with the therapist to invite a partner for couples therapy or even join a counseling group. Counseling sessions can occur in our office in San Antonio or Cypress, Texas or Farmington, Missouri or virtually for people who reside in Texas or Missouri. Read more about Counseling for Adults.

Counseling for Children

Sometimes therapy for children looks like therapy for adults, but it is usually quite different. Because children are not usually as capable of expressing themselves with words, we engage with kids through play.

Most therapy for children will take place in person at our office in San Antonio or Cypress, Texas or Farmington, Missouri, though there may be occasions when a virtual session could be appropriate. Most sessions will also be individually with your child, but the therapist may invite your child to join a therapy group, too. Read more about Counseling for Children.

Counseling for Teens

Therapists often use talk therapy for teens, like adults, but may also use more interactive methods and techniques from play therapy, if it is appropriate and a good fit. Even though teens are minors and their parents and guardians can arrange for therapy, the therapist needs to connect with the teenager to work on goals they find important. The counselor is not working to carry out the parents’ agenda, and the goal is not to “fix” the teen.

Counselors usually schedule individual sessions for teens, but sometimes they invite parents or other family members to participate. A therapist may also invite a teen to join a counseling group. Counseling sessions can occur in our office in San Antonio or Cypress, Texas or Farmington, Missouri or virtually for teens living in Texas or Missouri.

Family Therapy

Families are little communities, and each member plays a unique role. In family therapy, the whole family meets with a therapist to address issues and foster better communication and understanding. The counselor works with everyone in the family and may even use some activities or interactive techniques in addition to traditional talk therapy.

Most family therapy appointments will take place in person at our office in San Antonio or Cypress, Texas or Farmington, Missouri, though there may be occasions when a virtual session could be appropriate.

In Person Counseling & Virtual Counseling

We offer in person counseling appointments at our offices in San Antonio and Cypress, Texas and Farmington, Missouri, as well as virtual appointments for people who reside anywhere in the states of Texas or Missouri.

When possible, we encourage you to schedule an in person appointment because it often feels easier for you and the counselor to connect. Some clients start with in person appointments and transition to virtual appointments over time or schedule a blend of the two types. Virtual appointments can be beneficial if you live far away from an office, have scheduling conflicts, or have a contagious illness but still want to meet with your therapist.

Regardless of the format, your counseling session will always be confidential, and the time will be about helping you work toward your goals. Read more about Virtual Therapy.
