A Letter of Appreciation

A mother shares her appreciation for our Therapeutic Mentoring Program:

Our nine-year-old, Kaylin, struggles with reading and spelling. She has always had an Individualized Education Program (IEP), and when we changed schools a while ago, we wanted to find another adult who could work with her. She was the girl that would hunker down in her chair to not ask questions if she didn’t understand something.

That’s where Ms. Dawn comes into play. As a therapeutic mentor, Dawn helped Kaylin one on one and Kaylin understood her schoolwork better. Within a few months, she felt less shame and more confidence. Her grades were improving!

When the pandemic hit, everything changed. Schools closed for the remaining of the year leaving the kids to adapt to virtual learning. What a mess, I must say. It was confusing and overwhelming. We managed to get the hang of it, but my biggest concern was the social aspects of my kids' lives.

I reached out to PCHAS again and without hesitation Dawn asked how she could help. We added my younger daughter, Lillian, and she was super excited to be a part of the PCHAS program! Using safety protocols, Dawn arranged to work with both girls at our home. It’s something they really look forward to.

Nearly a year later, our girls are thriving. They both have A’s & B’s and are fantastic. I know that part of them doing great is me being very involved in their education, but I have to honestly give credit to Dawn and the PCHAS mentoring program. They really showed up beyond any ordinary acts of kindness. They always put my girls first, checked in with them academically & emotionally. When we struggled during the pandemic they made sure the girls had what they needed, from working with the school to deliver school lunches, to supplies, clothes and even groceries for the entire family.

I seriously am very fortunate to be a part of their program. My girls have built a loving and trusting relationship because of this program. I greatly appreciate everything they have done and highly recommend this program.
