Jennifer Quintero had dozens of volunteers and one big, big challenge: Social distancing.

“Some of our volunteers take care of children while the parents are in trainings,” she explains. These trainings may be about parenting skills, First Aid or making a budget. “When PCHAS suspended face-to-face classes in spring, because of the pandemic, our volunteers were disappointed. Of course, the kids were, too, because they enjoyed the activities and the special attention.”

Many PCHAS clients, because of their losses, do not have a strong support network. Their connections with volunteers are valuable. As PCHAS’ manager of volunteers, Jennifer wondered how to help families through the stress of social isolation. So, she and her staff organized a “care letter” project via email.

The project grew to include clients who had never met a PCHAS volunteer but might appreciate a note of encouragement. Staff submitted first names of clients: young children, teens and parents. Volunteers took friendly selfies to go with messages of support. Jennifer and her staff forwarded these to case workers, who shared them with clients.

This solution protected the privacy of the clients and met CDC guidelines for social distancing. At the same time, it fulfilled the PCHAS mission to provide care and support to children and families in need. “We’re grateful for our volunteers,” Jennifer says. “They walk alongside us, nurturing our clients and extending hope.”
