Kaitlyn Kearns is a dedicated volunteer at Presbyterian Children's Homes and Services Farmington, Missouri office. Adopted as a baby, she faced challenges growing up with an intellectual disability and ADHD, but she has always had a deep desire to help others. Despite her struggles in school, Kaitlyn focuses on what she loves—assisting others. Her passion led her to PCHAS, where she volunteers regularly, helping children and families navigate difficult times.
"I have always wanted to help people. It brings me great happiness to help with children," Kaitlyn shares. Her natural empathy and understanding of children have made her an invaluable asset, particularly when managing conflicts or easing the anxieties that many of the children at PCHAS face. "I like to get on the child’s level to manage conflict. I ask them about their day and let them know it’s okay to have bad days," she explains.
Kaitlyn's passion for helping children extends beyond just offering support; she has a deep-rooted desire to make a lasting impact. Originally aspiring to teach special education, Kaitlyn now channels that passion into her volunteer work, ensuring that families and children feel hopeful even in the most challenging times. "I want families to know that although it’s difficult right now, there’s light at the end of the struggle," she says.
One of Kaitlyn's most memorable experiences as a volunteer is when she helps transition children from their homes to PCHAS, often accompanying them on supervised visits. While sometimes challenging, these moments have only strengthened her commitment to the children and families she serves. Volunteering has also helped Kaitlyn grow personally. "I’ve learned how to speak with anyone who comes through our doors and help them with whatever they are struggling with," she reflects. This experience has deepened her understanding of the community she serves.
Kaitlyn volunteers a couple of times a week, depending on the office's needs. She hopes to take on even more responsibility in the future, dedicating more time to helping children with their struggles, whether it's with schoolwork or other challenges they face. "I want to spend more time with whatever they need help with and have more responsibility with whatever is needed," she says.
Looking ahead, Kaitlyn has high hopes for PCHAS, including the return of the after-school program, where she could further assist children with their academic struggles. Her dedication and passion for helping others shine brightly, inspiring everyone at PCHAS.
