For National Foster Care Month, we have shared stories of PCHAS families and their journey with foster care. As we (the Foster Care & Adoption Guides) listened to families share their stories, a unique pattern quickly emerged: three families included a foster mom who had experienced foster care as a child. This shared experience brought a depth of understanding and empathy to their role as foster parents.
We are deeply grateful for all our foster families and their selfless commitment to children who cannot be with their own families. Foster families follow tons of rules, receive guidance from professionals, and strive to learn and grow continually. Their dedication helps children navigate their trauma and begin to heal. Foster families are volunteers who choose to give of themselves for different reasons, but all share a common mission: to ensure that every child is safe and loved.
Our gratitude for Foster parents who have lived experience is even greater. Their decision to care for children who have experienced abuse or neglect, as they did, proves their belief that kids can thrive in healthy families. Their perspective (when they feel comfortable sharing) in training classes and support groups is invaluable for our staff and other foster parents. They encourage us in our work and challenge us to never forget to keep the children first in all we do.
We are confident you will want to read their stories and hope they inspire you to learn more.
As National Foster Care Month comes to a close, we invite you to continue learning about fostering all year long. PCHAS offers weekly Foster Care & Adoption Online Info Sessions, a valuable resource for those interested in fostering.
