We all have struggles, and sometimes bad things happen. Life can be hard. If you have been in a serious car accident, served with the military in a combat zone, or been the victim of an assault or something similar, you are a trauma survivor. It is common to have anxiety, stress and other symptoms as your brain and body try to ensure you are safe after a traumatic event.


Each person reacts differently, but there are common experiences for those who have lived through trauma. Here is a list of thirteen that others have reported. Review the list and consider whether you have experienced these things more often since your traumatic event.

  • Inability to recall key features of the trauma
  • Negative feelings or emotions
  • Decreased interest in activities
  • Feeling isolated
  • Difficulty experiencing positive feelings or emotions
  • Irritability or aggression
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Risky or destructive behavior
  • Heightened awareness or watchfulness
  • Heightened startle reaction
  • Exaggerated blame of yourself or others
  • Overly negative thoughts and assumptions about yourself or the world
