Most therapy for adults is what you would likely call talk therapy. Unlike what you may see in a movie, people do not usually lie down on a couch and talk about whatever is on their mind the whole time. Instead, counseling usually feels like a good conversation with a trusted friend. You and your counselor will usually sit in chairs or on a sofa. We want you to feel comfortable and open to talk about whatever you need to. Your counselor will often start the session by catching up on what’s been going on in your life and getting to know you better before discussing why you are meeting. The session will likely end with some type of assignment or task to work on during the week before you return.
At PCHAS, our counselors often use Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy techniques. These are not the only approaches we use, but they typically focus on exploring how our thoughts and feelings influence our emotional responses and behaviors and help you set goals and find solutions.
Adults can participate in counseling individually but may also arrange with the therapist to invite a partner for couples therapy or even join a counseling group. Counseling sessions can occur in our office in San Antonio or Cypress, Texas or Farmington, Missouri or virtually for people who reside in Texas or Missouri.
