Help PCHAS Fight Child Abuse
April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. During the past five years, we have been able to serve more than 12,000 children and their families. When you think about the 105 years of operation, the total number of children served by this ministry is truly significant. While numbers do not tell the whole story, they do reveal many things:
- Each child in one of our residential programs had 365 days without hunger or fear last year.
- Each family helped through our Child and Family programs experienced a reduction in stress, tension and anxiety, by receiving help and guidance in resolving major problems.
- Each young person who completed another year of college or technical school through our Advanced Education/Aftercare Program is that much closer to fulfilling the destiny that God has prepared.
In 2007, the state of Texas investigated 194,094 claims of child abuse and neglect. From those cases, investigators confirmed 71,344 children had been victims of abuse or neglect, and almost 16,000 were removed from their homes as a result.
Consider asking your church to get involved by participating in one or more of these activities during April:
- Include information on child abuse in a Sunday bulletin.
- Make a Child Abuse Prevention bulletin board.
- Collect a special offering and send it to a ministry serving children.
- Designate a safe place for those children in your congregation who are being abused.
- Explain to the children in your community that it is never OK to be hurt by an adult - even if it is a parent.
- Call your local children's shelter to find out what activities are going on in your community to raise awareness of child abuse.
