How can a child or family be referred to Presbyterian Children's Homes and Services (PCHAS)?
Anyone can refer a child or a family, including self-referral. Children and families come to PCHAS through churches, schools, social service agencies, the justice system, neighbors, child protective agencies, or through any other avenue. Please call us toll free at 1-800-888-1904 numbers below to make a referral or if you have any questions about our services.
PCHAS offers a variety of volunteer opportunities for individuals, families or groups, ranging from a one-time experience to a year-long commitment. These opportunities include office work, outdoor maintenance, mentoring, or sharing a skill with our children. Please call the Rev. Nancy Mossman, volunteer ministries coordinator, at 1-800-888-1904.
What is the relationship between PCHAS and the Presbyterian Church (USA)?
Presbyterian Children's Homes and Services is endorsed by Synod of the Sun, a governing body of the Presbyterian Church (USA), and is a validated mission of PCUSA. However, we receive no direct funding from the mission budgets of presbyteries, Synod of the Sun or the General Assembly of PC(USA). Individuals and congregations provide more than 80% of our annual gifts, enabling us to continue serving more and more children each year.
How does PCHAS provide Christ-centered care?
Many of the children and families we serve have never known the unconditional love of God. As a faith-based agency, PCHAS prefers to employee individuals who possess a Christian commitment and concern for children and families. In our residential programs, spiritual guidance and Christian nuture are provided through prayer, Bible study and participation in a local Presbyterian congregation. Our Child & Family Specialists integrate faith into their practice with families, helping them to get in touch with their beliefs and encouraging them in their spiritual development.
What happens to the children after they leave the care of PCHAS?
The ultimate goal of our foster care programs is to reunite children with their biological family. Sometimes this is a biological mother or father, but often it is an aunt, uncle, or grandparent. About 40% of the children who come into one of our foster homes live with us until they graduate from high school.
The primary goal in our Child and Family Programs is to preserve the family. We work with the whole family to solve the crises that cause instability so the children do not have to be removed from the home.
After high school, many of our children participate in the PCHAS Advanced Education and Aftercare Program, which offers support, guidance and scholarships to attend community college, university or technical school.
You can make a gift of cash, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, real estate or a bequest through your will. Throughout the year, PCHAS has special needs, so you can call the Central Office at 1-800-888-1904 to find out what those needs are if you wish to purchase something tangible.
You may also consider some type of life income gift that will provide you with a lifetime income while furthering the work and ministry of Presbyterian Children's Homes and Services.
Your gift can be designated to a particular home, campus, or program.
