Our Programs: Education Programs
Educating the children in our care is of utmost importance at Presbyterian Children’s Homes and Services. We strive to provide a way for our young people to excel in school and in their lives through high-quality education.
For a child to fulfill his potential, a focused approach to meeting educational needs is required. Our goal is to create an “intentional community of learning” in each of our programs to maximize our children’s academic and vocational potential while they are with us.
Education in Group Homes
Our staff members help children and their families develop individual plans to address their educational goals. To ensure our youth have every opportunity to succeed in school, each campus is equipped for tutoring, consultation with educators, and educational advocacy services.
Our kids attend schools that are approved or accredited by the Texas Education Agency, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and/or the Texas Private School Accreditation Commission. Their schools also provide services for children who need special education services.
Education in Child and Family Programs and Foster Care Programs
PCHAS education staff are available for consultation and educational advocacy for families served by our Child and Family and Foster Care programs. Our Education Department trains foster parents and Child and Family staff on ways to emphasize education with kids in our care and how to work with schools to help students be successful.
Advanced Education and Aftercare Programs
As children reach 18 years of age, they “age out” of our care. PCHAS provides aftercare assistance that includes guidance and support for these young adults as they transition into independent living. Referrals can be made to the area Child and Family Program for additional family support and individual counseling.
Through Advanced Education, PCHAS also provides young people who formerly were in our care with the opportunity to attend college, university or trade/technical school. Career counseling establishes educational objectives and helps youth select the best university, college or technical school to reach their goals. Our staff assists the students in submitting applications to educational institutions, applying for financial grants and securing housing.
In addition to the grants and scholarships students qualify for on their own, PCHAS provides funding for room, board, tuition, books and other expenses. Each student must maintain eligibility in the program by earning a grade of C or better.
Coalition for Residential Education
PCHAS is a member of the Coalition for Residential Education (CORE), the national group of nonprofit organizations that serve economically and socially disadvantaged children through residential education.
